Military contest

The LEGO Military Flickr group is holding Group Build Contest 002. One of the categories is Micro, with two subcategories - battlefield and model:
The Micro scale category sort of expands on both the dio and model themes. The Battlefield subcategory should be built on at least a 48 by 48 baseplate and is your chance to depict a battle full of tanks, warplanes, artillery guns, etc all built to microscale. Do take advantage of the opportunity to include landscaping, roads, rivers, maybe trees, and/or buildings. The Model subcategory can be a model of any real life weapon of war. There is no strict rule for what scale it should be, aside from significantly smaller than minifig scale. As a rule of the thumb, if a person would be taller than about one brick in relation to your Micro model you are probably building too large.

This was recently discussed on LAML radio.

While we're in Dubai, it's a good place to note that LEGO has announced two upcoming Legoland parks, one in Dubai and another in Malaysia. In celebration of this second, Legoland designer Andy Grubb built the Perdana Putra (Malaysian Prime Minister's office). Thanks to Kristi of Brick Star for the first photo below.

Some micro reading

Three years ago Allan Bedford published the Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide. It's a great entry into learning how to build with LEGO, and at least at one point was sold in the official LEGO stores. I recently noticed that you can download and read Chapter 6: Microscale Building: More Than Meets the Eye for free. Regular readers of this blog and experienced microscale builders will probably find this a bit simplistic - remember, the intended audience is not the AFOL who's been building for decades but rather the beginner - but there are still some interesting things in there like a discussion of scales and some neat examples.

Home One

Recently LEGO announced the upcoming Home One set. "Pshaw!" cries FoxHound, and unveils his own Mon Calamari Star Cruiser. This looks to be in scale with the ISD set. In some ways it's best to look at it without the nice black background and see in in the context of a living room - generally not the best way to display a MOC, but you can certainly appreciate the size of this creation.

Edit - I stand corrected. This is not actually at the same scale as the ISD set, but at a larger scale. Thanks, RH.
