Nananananananana - Bat-micro!

Nnenn is an outstanding builder who has presented many great space and related MOCs. Here he digs into the comic book world with a Batwing and a vehicle for Robin (does that one have a name?).

A classic set

A while ago, there was a bit of a fan fad to creat alternate versions of the classic set 1592, Town Square. Among these, Uli Meyer had a micro 1592 and Cubo had a mini 1592.

Set 4484 - Mini X-Wing Fighter and Tie Advanced

Our next set for review is 4484 - Mini X-Wing Fighter and Tie Advanced

In 2003 LEGO released the first sets from the Mini subtheme of the Star Wars theme. These $4.00 sets recreated SW ships in microscale. The first four sets each contained a pair of vehicles, and what can be more iconic than an X-Wing and Vader's TIE Advanced? The X-Wing design was simple and easily replicated (as in my own Rogue Squadron). One disappointment, to me, was that this set included Vader's TIE Advanced, while the normal TIE was only released as a promotional set, 3219. This meant that you could easily buy a squadron of X-Wings, but you ended up with a squadron of TIE Advanced Fighters, but at the same time it was hard to accumulate many TIE Fighters. I'd have rather had the TIE Advanced as the promotional set, because in the end you only need one of those, and have the TIE Fighter bundled in this set. One bonus in this set was a portion of a TIE Bomber. You had to collect all four of the first line of Minis to get the pieces to make the whole TIE Bomber.

Set 4484 guides on Lugnet, Brickset and From Bricks to Bothans. Inventory on Peeron.

Set 5526 - Skyline (new feature!)

Welcome to a new feature here on MicroBricks! I'm going to regularly (weekly?) feature official LEGO sets built at microscale.

Our first set is 5526 - Skyline.

Back in late 2004, LEGO announced a new feature, LEGO Factory. Builders can download LEGO Digital Designer, a CAD program that allows people to design their own LEGO sets. They can then upload their designs so that they, and others, can buy the sets that they designed. To inaugurate the LEGO Factory, a contest was held that asked people to design microscale town creations, and the top ten picks were sold in set form. One of these is today's feature, 5526 - Skyline. This set, released in the summer of 2005, contains 2747 elements and cost US$130. My favorite portion of this set is the Statue of Liberty designed by Nathan Sawaya , whose microscale New York creations have been featured here before. Hot pursuit, by Nathanel Kuipers features vehicles for land, sea, and air. The two junior winners, Joseph Martin and Joseph Zekich added the Sears Tower and LEGO Corp office buildings, respectively.

Set 5526 on Brickset and Lugnet. Inventory on Peeron. Instructions on LEGO.com.

Indexed

I wasn't going to do this, but my inner drive for organization led me to create an index of featured microscale MOCs that I've blogged. A link will reside over in the sidebar --> and I'll hopefully update it regularly.

Not bored of micro yet

Here are two great board games that use micro techniques. A few years ago Gary Thomas posted his version of the board game Cathedral.

About a month ago, Jeffery MacEachern presented his version of a Traffic Jam puzzle.

Some good ol' mini castle action

Just yesterday I was complaining that space was dominating the micro world. Somehow I missed Lovebacu's great micro Black Knight's Castle (compare it to the original set 6086). Thanks to Chris Wuntz for the heads up. I see that BB and Klocki already noted it as well.
